portrait of a life: unhurried wonder

Daisy sleeps by my side while The Incredible Dr. Pol plays on Disney+.  Typically, she likes to watch the farm animals and barks at the TV in greeting, but the time change is making the both of us a little extra sleepy and Daisy opts for a Sunday morning nap instead. Lighted in the living room is [...]

portrait of a life: free

The presence of a life is a complex and multi-faceted thing, so full of tiny moving pieces that come together in a masterpiece, a story, a portrait. In the daily, we see only one piece at a time and wonder, “What makes a life spectacular or miraculous or valuable?” How could mine ever be? Where [...]

portrait of a life: measured

February 28, 2020February 28, 2020 l m andersonLeave a comment

Last night, I typed twice on my phone “What if God is never disappointed,” and each time, the predictive text on my phone suggested the word “measured.” What if God is never measured? Although not what I was trying to say last night, it struck me, and I have been mulling it over in my [...]

It is an unfinished room and I am an unfinished thing.
My grandfather,
I have been lifted
I’m at Mom and Dad’s awaiting an AC repair at my house and Daisy is with Grandpa, living her best life among other dogs and goats. She probably doesn’t even miss me but I sure miss her!
Even when blinking, she’s more photogenic than I am.
Saturday meditation: it seems as though I have been waiting my whole life to be invited. I long desperately for the approval, appreciation, and affection of others. And mostly I live under assumption, longing to be invited but telling myself I won’t be. Believing I am inherently unwanted, I’ve sat a lot of things out. But the truth is my worthiness is not dependent on an invitation (to participate, to collaborate, to show up, to invest, to love, to...) In fact, my existence alone is the invitation. The fact that I am here at all gives me the right and privilege to take up space on the earth as God intended.
